Free Screening: Voice of Space at Anthology Film Archives

Join us at Anthology Film Archives for an evening of films and videos presented on the occasion of The Drawing Center’s current exhibition Voice of Space: UFOs and Paranormal Phenomena.

This screening explores UFOs and paranormal phenomena as profound mysteries that sit at the intersection of human experience, belief, and the unknown. The selected works investigate how these phenomena shape our understanding of the universe and expand what we believe about humanity's place within it.

Peggy Ahwesh

Over the course of her career, Peggy Ahwesh has produced one of the most heterogeneous bodies of work in experimental film and video. A true bricoleur, her tools include narrative and documentary styles, improvised performance, Super-8 film, found footage, digital animation, and Pixelvision video. With playfulness and humor, she investigates cultural and gender identities, the role of the subject, language and representation.

Kevin Jerome Everson

Since the late 1990s, Kevin Jerome Everson (b. 1965) has created a singular body of work spanning film, sculpture, and photography that conflates archival, documentary, and scripted footage, blurring the distinctions between what is real, and what is simulated. Everson works to obstruct the narratives he presents, which in turn shifts his films from representations of the everyday to a meditation on the abstract and emotive registers that exist within it.

Everson is the recipient of the Berlin Prize at the American Academy in Berlin and the 24th Heinz Award. His films have been exhibited and screened widely and his work has been shown internationally at film festivals including Sundance, New York, Toronto, Venice, Vienna, Ontario, London, Rotterdam, Berlin, Ann Arbor, and Oberhausen. Everson’s work is held in many permanent collections both nationally and internationally.

Kevin Jerome Everson was born in Mansfield, Ohio. He is currently a Professor of Art at the University of Virginia.
George Kuchar

George Kuchar was a legendary figure in the underground film scene. Raw and often outrageous, his low-tech video diaries chronicle an ongoing personal history. Kuchar's eccentric presence pervades these "home videos," which veer from the scatological to the sublime as they observe the banality and intimacy of the everyday. With perverse humor and melancholy, his video journals resonate with an unexpected poetry.

Tony Oursler

Deeply rooted in a conceptual framework, Tony Oursler conjures multimedia and immersive experiences which combine traditional art making tools with new technologies. Oursler draws inspiration from wide ranging pop cultural phenomena including telecommunications, narrative evolution, conspiracy, social media, facial recognition, mysticism and environmental concerns. His works often take the form of a “palimpsest,” layering possible futures with the recent past while focusing on present day issues. As a pioneer of video art in early 1970s California and New York, Oursler developed a unique fusion of poetic free-association, stream of consciousness, dramaturgy and radical formal experimentation, employing painting, animation, montage and live action. From performative and lo-fi beginnings to his high tech environments of today, he holds an enduring fascination with the overlapping worlds of popular and subcultural activities and belief systems. Today, Oursler believes art can be “practiced by all and is a unifying transformative force.”

Adam Putnam

Adam Putnam is a multidisciplinary artist whose elusive, shape-shifting practice employs performance, photography, and the creation of images on paper. These small, intricate drawings are part of his ongoing series titled “Visualizations,” which seem to capture dream fragments or psychic portals, revealing unseen forces and evoking both the universal mind theory and the Theosophical concept of the Akashic Records, a 19 th-century idea proposed by Helena Blavatsky comprising the cosmic memory or non-physical compilation of every thought and event.
