Free Screening + Talk: Ceija Stojka: Making Visible at Anthology Film Archives

Join us at Anthology Film Archives for a screening of Austrian filmmaker, writer and researcher Karin Berger’s 1999 documentary Ceija Stojka. Presented on the occasion of The Drawing Center’s exhibition Ceija Stojka: Making Visible, on view February 19 through June 7, 2026, the film explores the fullness of Stojka’s production as a visual artist, centered in her Roma life and heritage. Spurred by the resurgence of extreme right nationalism in Austria and abroad, and by her experiences as a Holocaust survivor, Stojka created works of profound beauty and horror that resonate today in strikingly contemporary terms.

The screening will be followed by a conversation and Q+A between Berger and Swedish documentary filmmaker, author, and journalist Lawen Mohtadi.

Karin Berger

Karin Berger is an Austrian filmmaker, writer and researcher. After her studies of social anthropology and political science in Vienna she worked as a freelance author. In the early 1980s she started working with video and super 8, in 1984 she made – together with a collective - her first feature-length documentary Kitchen Conversations With Rebel Women, which looked at the resistance of Austrian women to the Nazi regime. The main themes of her work are gender issues and the period of National Socialism – with a focus on the memories of female resistance fighters and survivors.

In 1988 she published the memoir of Romani artist and Holocaust survivor Ceija Stojka, We live in Secrecy, followed by two further books and the two films Ceija Stojka and Under The Green Green Grass Beneath. Since then she works on a wide range of projects, including filming, writing, producing radio programs. She lives in Vienna.
Lawen Mohtadi

Lawen Mohtadi is a Swedish writer, editor and documentary filmmaker. She is the author of the award winning book The Day I am Free, a biography on the pioneering Swedish-Roma writer and activist Katarina Taikon. She adapted the book to the documentary film Taikon, which had cinematic release in 2015. In 2015-2021 Mohtadi was a Senior Editor at the publishing house Natur & Kultur in Stockholm, and is currently an Exhibition Strategist at the Swedish Holocaust Museum.
