Josh Smith and Frank Walter
“He’s trying to expel his soul and his pain and his happiness all at the same time. He had to capture everything that he could. He knew he was not going to be around forever, and he wanted people to know who he was.” — Josh Smith
In this new video, artist Josh Smith visits Frank Walter’s studio in Antigua and reflects on Walter’s surroundings, art practice and legacy. Frank Walter: To Capture a Soul will be first solo museum exhibition in the United States to focus on the work of Antiguan artist Frank Walter (1926–2009). A polymath with a keen intellect and thirst for knowledge, Walter created a body of work that encompasses a variety of mediums, subject matter, and styles. On the occasion of To Capture a Soul, The Drawing Center is also pleased to present Josh Smith: Life Drawing, the artist’s homage to Walter, a testament to a shared commitment to approaching their subjects with honesty, curiosity, and humble dedication.
