The Drawing Center's Drawing Painting was the first U.S. solo exhibition of drawings by artist Suzan Frecon (born 1941), organized by Catherine de Zegher, Executive Director of The Drawing Center. The exhibition included approximately fifty watercolors from the 1990s: a comprehensive view of Frecon's outstanding contribution to the field of drawing. Over the course of her practice, the artist has focused on reaching a higher and more pure form of abstraction in her art.
Frecon considers her work to have four fundamental ingredients: form, color, material, and 'art.' From the start, she was inclined to investigate the complexities of form in painting and drawing, and has devoted her attention to the creation of works whose expansiveness transcends their own borders, even though they seem to respond to an underlying rational order.
The exhibition and its accompanying publication were made possible through the generous support of The Rockefeller Foundation; Petrobras Distribuidora; The Getty Grant Program; Carlos Henrique Ferreira Braga, Rio de Janeiro; Guiseppina Drago, Rio de Janeiro; the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, Caracas; and with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
