Selections Fall 2000 encompassed a wide range of artistic styles, concepts, and themes. The Selections exhibition series, while typically non-thematic, provided the artists with an opportunity to present a significant body of work, and demonstrated the diversity of content, materials, and formal concerns found in contemporary drawing.
Geraldine Lau's map-like wall drawings, made with translucent tape and oil paint, questioned the relative truths of cartographic information. Grady Gerbracht documented performance scenes along the route of his daily commute, which he drew on the window of a bus; this ephemeral art was showcased using slide projection. Glenn Grafelman created drawings that depicted shifting streams of light across windows in midtown Manhattan. Mary Lum configured cutout gouaches which were layered, and rendered multiple perspectives of a given architectural site. Miranda Maher's Book Portraits were composed of a stack of Chinese silk tissue, and were traced with diagrams and charts from scientific and instructional books. Julie Mehretu's drawings of utopian architecture were composed of two layers of paper: one opaque, the other transparent. Lucas Monaco's drawings on acrylic plates were chronicles of investigations into urban planning and development, architecture, and socio-economic and community trends. Using a corner of the gallery, Oona Stern rendered a drawing using acrylic house paint, covering a section of both the floor and lower wall.
Selections Fall 2000 was one in a continuing series of exhibitions that brought the work of emerging artists from across the nation and abroad to public attention. All of the featured artists had participated in The Drawing Center's Viewing Program, a service which offered emerging artists an opportunity to present drawing to the curatorial staff for professional feedback and to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition.
Selections Fall 2000 was held at 35 Wooster Street and ran consecutively with Ania Soliman: Biohazards, which was held at the Drawing Room on 40 Wooster Street.
Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
Significant support was received from the National Endowment for the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, New York State Council on the Arts, and the Drawing Center's National Council and Members.
