Open Sessions 13: Core Sample

A clear line meanders through space, losing speed and direction until it shifts shape, becoming a cloud on a page. Core Sample: Open Sessions 13 explores drawn marks as a way to locate place on a sheet of paper or to suggest the expanse of geospatial time travel. Symbolic gestures borrowed from mythic worlds alongside references to the everyday offer insight into the artists’ varied traditions, identities, and cultures. Core Sample: Open Sessions 13 features the work of Alex Callender, Liz Collins, Dennis RedMoon Darkeem, Zatara McIntyre, Johanna Unzueta, and Cosmo Whyte.

Core Sample is one of five exhibitions presented in The Lab between October 2018 and December 2019 as part of the third cycle of The Drawing Centers Open Sessions program. These thematic group shows are conceived and organized by Rosario Güiraldes and Lisa Sigal, Open Sessions Curators, together with participating artists. In the second year of the program cycle, Open Sessions Curators also organize a full-museum exhibition to which all Open Sessions artists contribute work that best manifests and/or expands the meaning and relevance of drawing today.

Open Sessions builds on The Drawing Center’s long-standing legacy of championing work by early-career artists who explore the nature of drawing in its many manifestations.

Johanna Unzueta

Johanna Unzueta (b. 1974, Santiago, Chile) lives and works in New York City and Berlin. Unzueta studied art at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, North, and South America. In 2020 she had a major solo exhibition, Tools for Life, at the Modern Art Oxford, and in 2019, Field Station: Johanna Unzueta, From My Head to My Toes, to My Teeth to My Nose was presented by MSU Broad . Unzueta was recently featured in the group exhibitions O rio e uma Serpiente, 3rd Frestas Art Triennial, São Paulo (2020); Searching the Sky for Rain, Sculpture Center, Long Island City (2019); What’s Love Got to Do With It? as part of the 2018–20 Open Sessions program at The Drawing Center, New York City (2019); and was included in We Do Not Need Another Hero for the 10th Berlin Biennale (2018). Other solo exhibitions have been shown at Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Mexico City (2017); Jewett Art Gallery, Wellesley College (2017); and Queens Museum of Art, Flushing (2009). Residencies include Launch Pad LaB, La Boissière, France (2019); La Tallera, Sala de Arte Publico Siqueiros in Cuernavaca, Mexico (2015); DIVA, Danish Arts Council Committee for International Visual Arts (2012); and Capacete, Rio de Janeiro (2007). In 2021, Unzueta received the support of Akanemie der Künste, Berlin, with funding from the Federal Government's Commissioner for Culture and Media as part of the NEUSTART KULTUR program.
