Korwa Drawings: Contemporary Tribal Works on Paper from Central India

The Drawing Center presented the first New York exhibition of drawings by the Hill Korwa, a tribe in Central India. Curated by Franck André Jamme and The Drawing Center's Director Catherine de Zegher, Korwa Drawings: Contemporary Tribal Works on Paper from Central India featured drawings that explored the boundaries between drawing and writing. The works included in the exhibition were collected by the French poet Franck André Jamme who stayed with the Hill Korwa in 1996. Jamme's visit was, in turn, inspired by an earlier trip made to the Korwa community by the important Indian poet Swaminathan in 1983.

To accompany the exhibition, The Drawing Center published an edition of Drawing Papers (No. 13), containing an introduction by Drawing Center director Catherine de Zegher, an essay by Frank André Jamme, and illustrations of selected works in the exhibition.
