PurchaseApril 8 – July 22, 1989
Inigo Jones: Complete Architectural Drawings presented 100 drawings by the renowned Elizabethan architect, Inigo Jones. It was the first major exhibition of the drawings by this master draughtsman, who had transformed architectural drawing into an art form of the highest level. It included all of Jones's major architectural drawings, supplemented by a selection of his finest figurative and scene designs. The works were assembled from Worcester College and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; the Royal Institute of British Architects, London; the Duke of Devonshire's collections at Chatsworth and the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York. The exhibition was organized chronologically and thematically. The drawings charted Jones's progress as a collaborator with Ben Jonson in the early 1600s to his work as the supreme classical architect under James I and Charles I, a period of 25 years when he was responsible for an astonishingly varied sequence of royal works that included the Queen's House, Greenwich (1616–18; 1630–40), the Prince's Lodging, Newmarket Palace (1618–19), the Banqueting House (1619–22), Somerset House (1626–36) and the restoration of St. Paul's Cathedral (1633–42).
A lecture was given by John Harris at the Center on the evening of Monday, April 10, 1989. The exhibition was also accompanied by a book-length catalog written by John Harris and Gordon Higgott and published by Philip Wilson Publishers, London. The catalog illustrated all the drawings in the exhibition and was 336 pages.
John Harris, the renowned architectural historian and former Keeper of the Royal Institute of British Architects, was the curator of the exhibition and author of the accompanying book published by Philip Wilson Ltd.
