Zine Workshop: Certainly an Act
September 19, 2026, 10:00am – 1:00pm
Create your own zine at The Drawing Center!
Inspired by our current exhibition Certainly an Act: Works on Paper by Pope.L—a comprehensive survey of more than two hundred works that reveals drawing as a central, expansive, and generative force in the artist's practice—this hands-on zine-making workshop invites participants to engage with Pope.L's playful, critical, and deeply inventive approach to image-making and language.
Participants will begin with a guided tour of the exhibition, exploring how Pope.L transformed drawing into a space for humor, contradiction, vulnerability, and critique. Following the tour, participants will create their own zines using a variety of creative techniques to poetically interpret the artworks through writing, drawing, or a combination of both. Through prompts and exercises, participants will develop personal responses to the exhibition while learning accessible zine-making methods.
Organized in collaboration with 002Press, an interdisciplinary collective and printing press founded by artists and designers Justyn Morris and Alfred Dudley III, the workshop draws on the collective's commitment to zine-making, poetry, illustration, graphic design, and improvisational visual storytelling rooted in the Black American diaspora. The workshop will also offer an opportunity to browse and purchase zines from the organizations' archives.
All art materials will be provided.
