Eddie Martinez: 20 Years of Painting
Join artist Eddie Martinez and Dan Nadel, Steven and Ann Ames Curator of Drawing and Prints at the Whitney Museum, for a conversation celebrating the launch of Eddie Martinez: 20 Years of Painting, published by Monacelli. Doors open at 6pm, with the conversation beginning promptly at 6:30pm, followed by a book signing at 7:30pm.
Eddie Martinez: 20 Years of Painting celebrates two decades of work by the artist, whose energetic, improvisational paintings have made him one of the most compelling of his generation. The book traces the evolution of an artist whose expressionist canvases—at once raw and refined, and bold, yet intimate—expand the language of contemporary abstract and figurative art while conversing facilely with the much-lauded art history that precedes it.
The monograph features new essays by esteemed writers Dan Nadel and Ross Simonini, along with revealing anecdotes from Martinez about especially personal paintings. Martinez has a decade-long association with The Drawing Center that includes the solo exhibition Eddie Martinez: Studio Wall (2017–2018). For Studio Wall, Martinez papered the gallery with thousands of drawings, with several larger drawings and paintings hung on top of these sketches, allowing viewers to observe the interconnection between all aspects of his practice.
