DrawNow! Online! with Peter Ahlberg

May 28, 2020, 12:30pm

Ellen Lupton and Abbott Miller, Poster for Cooper Union School of Art Visiting Artist Lecture Series (detail), 1985. Paper, photostats, white paint, black marker, rubber cement, non-repro blue pencil, 26 1/2 44 inches. Courtesy The Herb Lubalin Study Center at The Cooper Union.

Join graphic designer, author, and educator Peter Ahlberg for a talk and workshop that explores the dynamic relationship between drawing, typography, and design.

The talk will examine typographic and lettering samples from The Met’s drawing and prints collection; language/type-based works shown at The Drawing Center, including those by Matt Mullican, Jackson Mac Low, Judith Bernstein, and Emily Dickinson; and archival design materials from Please Make This Look Nice, Ahlberg’s 2016 book and exhibition project (Skira Rizzoli/The Drawing Center).

The hands-on workshop will guide participants through the process of drawing letters/words in order to see the often overlooked nuances and details of letterforms, and to discover the remarkable way the very meaning of those words can be changed by altering their visual form and expression.
