January 20 – March 24, 1979
ViewJune 1 – August 31, 1978
The Travel Sketches of Louis I. Kahn, an exhibition which surveyed the graphic work of one of America's foremost architects, was on view at The Drawing Center, at 137 Greene Street. The exhibition featured works from the 1920s-1950s, and included one drawing done in 1913, when Kahn was only twelve. The exhibition was organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and showcased 91 works, which ranged from quick pencil sketches to large scale works in color.
The exhibition was accompanied by lectures by Vincent Scully, Romaldo Giurgola, a close professional colleague of Kahn's, and by Esther Kahn, who presented a film on her late husband's work directed by Hans Namuth and Paul Falkenberg. A conservation workshop on architectural drawings was also held in conjunction with the exhibition.
The Travel Sketches of Louis I. Kahn was one of a series of architectural exhibitions presented by The Drawing Center. The next in the series was Visionary Drawings: Architecture and Planning.
The Travel Sketches of Louis I. Kahn was made possible in part with public funds provided by the New York State Council on the Arts.
