Tomoko Takahashi

June 9 – July 31, 1998

The installation, Tomoko Takahashi, featured work by the artist, and was composed of common paper products—leaflets, receipts, invoices, cartons, tickets, magazines and book pages, notes, and so on—to which the artist had added scribbled pen marks, blocking out the printed information. These altered pieces of paper were attached to the wall in an overlapping and rhythmic formation, evoking the directional pattern of reading. Altered and arranged by the artist, this assemblage of paper enacted a dynamic transformation of the everyday into the poetic, and the legible into the inscrutable.

Tomoko Takahashi was installed at The Drawing Room at 40 Wooster Street, and ran concurrently with Selections Summer 1998, which was held at The Drawing Center, at 35 Wooster Street.
