Third Anniversary Exhibition
February 1 – March 31, 1980
The Drawing Center, which at this point in time was located at 137 Greene Street, celebrated its third anniversary with an exhibition of works by twelve artists. This was the eighth in The Drawing Center's series of exhibitions devoted to the work of emerging artists, who were selected through The Drawing Center's unique Artists' Viewing Program. The artists were: Eve Eisenstadt, Julia Healy, Sherri Hollaender, Wonsook Kim, Sidney McElhenney, George Moore, Michael Mostoller, Stephen Pentak, Katia Ramsey, Roger Shepherd, Philip Rand Smith, and Phillip R. Warner.
Works in the exhibition ranged from figurative to abstract, and included monochromatic as well as highly colored drawings. Eve Eisenstadt's large works were made up of triangular sections of handmade paper with colored linear elements fused into the sheets. Philip Rand Smith's vertical works contained contemporary genre scenes outlined in bright color against a black background. Sidney McElhenney's collages contained photographs of everyday items superimposed over thick layers of acrylic paint. Sherri Hollaender's drawings consisted of modular geometric shapes of pegboard and cardboard, which often resembled elements of architecture. Julia Healy used a scratch technique of black crayon over bright color. Katia Ramsey's works were studies for sculptures, and featured drawings of poodles and other breeds of show dogs. Wonsook Kim presented landscapes and figures in poetic black-and-white ink wash drawings. Michael Mostoller's witty, cartoon-like drawings blended familiar architectural and literary figures with current developments in the art and architecture scene. Stephen Pentak's drawings were composed of lines incised into the white painted surface of paper, revealing darker layers of paint underneath. Phillip R. Warner's large drawings were composed of pastel and crayon over silkscreen, while smaller studies were pastel over color xerox. Roger Shepherd and George Moore both worked with paint on paper, but differed in their technique: Shepherd used soft earth colors, and Moore used color to explore surface texture on a large scale.
On Wednesday evening, March 12, 1980, at 7:30, The Drawing Center presented a symposium featuring all the artists, who discussed their work and answered questions from the audience.
