Tacita Dean: The Roaring Forties: Seven Boards in Seven Days

February 20 – March 29, 1997

Tacita Dean: The Roaring Forties: Seven Boards in Seven Days was The Drawing Room's inaugural exhibition, located at 40 Wooster Street. The exhibition featured chalk drawings on blackboard, with Tacita Dean writing, "The blackboard drawings relate to film. The language they use is the language of framing and editing, and they are cinematic in scale. The images are drawn and redrawn in chalk, and the traces that remain hint at a movement through time within the frame of each board. The drawings work with maritime space, adopting the grandeur of the epic sea movie but giving a disrupted sense of narrative more appropriate to large scale storyboards and location notes than to stills from a finished movie."
