Summer 80

June 11 – August 9, 1980

Summer 80 was a group exhibition which highlighted the works of emerging artists. The artists in the exhibition were: Katie DeGroot, James Gingerich, John King, Walter Koenigstein, Rick Maslow, Frank Moore, Ellen Phelan, Maryam Zafar, and James Zwadlo.

Katie DeGroot depicted family, friends, and dogs in large tempera paintings on paper. Other image-related works included Frank Moore's studies for a recently completed mural of submarine life, and Rick Maslow's painted shapes which found their sources in other art. Energetic charcoal studies for paintings by James Gingerich were loosely derived from landscape, and Ellen Phelan showed both monochromatic gouache landscapes and seemingly dissimilar abstract paintings on paper. Purely abstract works included John King's handmade paper pieces, and collages by Walter Koenigstein composed of modular fragments of old drawings. Maryam Zafar based her colored pencil pieces on jazz compositions, and James Zwadlo's large multi-paneled pieces were heavily painted and textured.

On Wednesday evening, July 16, 1980, at 7:30 p.m., The Drawing Center presented a symposium. In the form of a panel discussion, the nine artists participating in Summer 80 discussed their work and answered questions from the audience.
