Group Show
November 15 – December 30, 1978
The group show concluded The Drawing Center's second year, and was the fifth in a series presenting work selected from The Drawing Center's unique Artists' Viewing Program.
The 11 selected artists were: James Biederman, Robert Coates, Guy-Dorian Cristol, Gary Falk, William Gwin, Tony Jannetti, Jane Kaplowitz, Robert Kitchen, Thomas Lawson, Jorge Madrinan, and Kurt Ossenfort. The diverse range of styles included Jane Kaplowitz's brightly colored interiors, Robert Kitchen's watercolors of vases, Guy-Dorian Cristol's delicate pencil and wash studies of classical architectural details, and Gary Falk's minimal drawings using familiar elements of domestic architecture. More abstract works were James Biederman's large-scale pastels, Kurt Ossenfort's documented drawings made with the aid of trees and wind, Tony Jannetti's large pieces composed of interwoven, multicolored strips of paper, and Robert Coates' small minimal drawings of ink and layered paper. The works of William Gwin, Jorge Madrinan, and Thomas Lawson all used recognizable objects and figures in highly personal ways.
In conjunction with this exhibition, on Wednesday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m., the Center presented a symposium in which all the exhibiting artists participated. In the form of a panel discussion, the artists discussed their individual ideas and methods of working, and answered questions from the audience.
Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
