The Selections exhibition series, while typically non-thematic, provided the artists with an opportunity to present a significant body of work, and demonstrated the diversity of content, materials, and formal concerns found in contemporary drawing. Selections Winter 2001 featured work by Mária Chilf, Royce Howes, Jessica Hutchins, Yun-Fei Ji, Grace Markman, Corey McCorkle, Carolyn Swiszcz, Scott Teplin, and Susan Tiger.
Mária Chilf draws sensual and organic forms, largely abstracted, to which she adds fine ink drawings which depict places such as a factory or a forest. Royce Howes' work is composed of newspaper photographs, which are subtly altered through layers of erasing, drawing, cropping, and collage. Through a variety of found materials, Jessica Hutchins constructs works from cardboard and papier-mâché. Yun-Fei Ji creates beautiful ink and pigment-based works, using layers of fine mulberry paper. Grace Markman creates an energetic universe of animated, cartoon-like figures, using crayon on paper. Corey McCorkle forms site-specific works, through the application of hundreds of monochrome cut-out shapes on the wall. Carolyn Swiszcz's colorful and richly textured works create the illusion of collage, depicting scenes from urban scenarios. In Scott Teplin's numerous books, a universe of cartoon "icons" (a bed, a pair of underwear, a rope) appear and reappear from one page to the next, in an array of diverse arrangements and new configurations. Susan Tiger presents extremely fragile drawings of singular objects, which are carefully placed in the center of vellum sheets.
The Selections exhibition series brought the work of emerging artists from across the nation and abroad to public attention. All of the artists included in the exhibition had participated in The Drawing Center's Viewing Program, a service offering emerging artists an opportunity to present their drawings to the curatorial staff for professional feedback and to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition.
Selections Winter 2001 was installed at The Drawing Center at 35 Wooster Street, and ran concurrently with From Sierra Maestra to La Habana: The Drawings of Chago, which was held at The Drawing Room, at 40 Wooster Street. Accompanying Selections Winter 2001 was the sixteenth edition of the Drawing Papers, a series of publications devoted to drawing, which included brief texts and an illustration of one work by each of the artists.
Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
Selections Winter 2001 was made possible through the generous support of the Cowles Charitable Trust and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
