Selections Winter 1995

November 18 – December 22, 1995

Selections Winter 1995 featured work by Silvia Bächli, Steve Greene, Jeff Krueger, Thomas Müller, Carsten Nicolai, and Allyson Strafella. The Selections exhibition series, while typically non-thematic, provided the artists with an opportunity to present a significant body of work, and demonstrated the diversity of content, materials, and formal concerns found in contemporary drawing. Although this exhibition series frequently presented artists working outside New York City, Selections Winter 1995 was particularly noteworthy for its geographic diversity—artists in the exhibition came from Basel, Switzerland; Chicago; Chemnitz and Stuttgart, Germany; as well as New York City.

Silvia Bächli arranges drawings which vary from the abstract to the figural. Carsten Nicolai composes large-scale drawings frequently populated with looming, totemic figures which border on abstract, fantastical forms. Nicolai is adept at manipulating scale and size, creating drawings which tower over the viewer or conform to the intimate, hand-held size of a book. Steve Greene creates layered drawings covered in swirling washes, intertwined with collaged paper, and schematic renderings of machines and vehicles. Allyson Strafella composes intimate drawings using the repetitive marks of a typewriter, transforming a machine into a tool for abstract mark-making. Jeff Krueger's drawings combine linear renderings of biomorphic forms, pools of brilliant color, and sporadic bits of text. Thomas Müller, who was living and working in Stuttgart, Germany, at the time, creates abstract drawings from a restricted palette of brown, yellow, white, and black.

The Selections exhibition series brought the work of emerging artists from across the nation and abroad to public attention. All of the artists included in the exhibition had participated in The Drawing Center's Viewing Program, a service offering emerging artists an opportunity to present their drawings to the curatorial staff for professional feedback and to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition.

Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
