Selections Winter 1994
January 8 – February 19, 1994
Selections Winter 1994 featured work by Jill Baroff, Jesse Sadia, Sara Sosnowy, Bill Wheelock, Bruce Witsiepe, and William Wood. The Selections exhibition series, while typically non-thematic, provided the artists with an opportunity to present a significant body of work, and demonstrated the diversity of content, materials, and formal concerns found in contemporary drawing.
Jill Baroff creates delicate grids out of rice paper, marking the intersecting corners with points of muted color. Using sticks of incense, Jesse Sadia punctures paper with a multitude of burn marks, reflecting on the relationship between the personal sanctuary and the sacred. Using a marker, Bill Wheelock's drawings are formed by ascending horizontal lines; as the marker loses ink, the lines gradually lighten, demonstrating the limitations of material elements. Linear patterns are also found in William Wood's drawings, but to an entirely different effect: the hypnotic lines are at once organic in form and machine-like in perfection. Sara Sosnowy's large-scale drawings travel across black-and-white circles and grids, exploring the process and play between formal components and emotional resonance. Bruce Witsiepe employs collage and watercolor, drawing upon methods of cutting-and-pasting materials, ultimately finding images and patterns through reductive means.
The Selections exhibition series brought the work of emerging artists from across the nation and abroad to public attention. All of the artists included in the exhibition had participated in The Drawing Center's Viewing Program, a service offering emerging artists an opportunity to present their drawings to the curatorial staff for professional feedback and to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition.
