Selections Winter 1993

January 9 – February 19, 1993

Selections Winter 1993 featured work by Cornelia Cottiati, Charles Crumb, Carl Fudge, Kenneth Goldsmith, Janine Gordon, Quentin Morris, and Eric Wolf. The Selections exhibition series, while typically non-thematic, provided the artists with an opportunity to present a significant body of work, and demonstrated the diversity of content, materials, and formal concerns found in contemporary drawing.

Cornelia Cottiati creates impressions of materials like cork or ink-filled water droplets, forming drawings which suggest increasing and decreasing rhythms, and the passing of time. Eric Wolf employs a vocabulary of motifs, working in black ink to create meditative images where the sky, water, and plant life blur together. Quentin Morris creates drawings in graphite, and has exclusively used gradients of black for over twenty-five years, noting how black represents "the infinite, the sublime, and the pure spiritualness of life." Kenneth Goldsmith's series, 73 Poems, consists of eighty drawings which are loosely based on a stream of consciousness rhyming system. Also included in the exhibition were works by the late Charles Crumb, with Selections Winter 1993 being the first time his work had been shown. Crumb's drawings spanned pages of lined notebooks, fluctuating in and out of recognizable text.

Selections Winter 1993 was one in a continuing series of exhibitions that brought the work of emerging artists from across the nation and abroad to public attention. All of the featured artists had participated in The Drawing Center's Viewing Program, a service which offered emerging artists an opportunity to present drawing to the curatorial staff for professional feedback and to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition.
