Selections Winter 1991
January 9 – February 16, 1991
Selections Winter 1991 was one in a continuing series of exhibitions that brought the work of emerging artists from across the nation and abroad to public attention. All of the featured artists had participated in The Drawing Center's Viewing Program, a service which offered emerging artists an opportunity to present drawing to the curatorial staff for professional feedback and to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition.
Selections Winter 1991 featured the work by Dove Bradshaw, Robert Goldman, Brad Melamed, Bruno Jakob, Steven Evans, John Larabee, Stefanie Nagorka, and Jack Pierson. The Selections exhibition series, while typically non-thematic, provided the artists with an opportunity to present a significant body of work, and demonstrated the diversity of content, materials, and formal concerns found in contemporary drawing.
Dove Bradshaw composes oxidized silver leaf pieces, which transform as the light and atmosphere changes. Steven Evans' drawings explore the development from autoerotism to object love. Robert Goldman reflects upon drawings that he made in Cologne, Germany, writing, "History can provide a resonance for our own lives. The images serve as a vehicle. The subject is light and time. My intention, then, as these sets of eyes look out at us, is to evoke a personal response." Jack Pierson's drawings, Heroine, Cocaine, and Justify My Love, are pieced together using cut paper, pins, and silver gelatin prints. Bruno Jakob's invisible drawings are drawn with water, evolving and fading, eventually leaving only a trace of the original—an exploration of the futility of control. John Larabee's watercolor and gouache drawings were created during the last three months of his life, as he was losing his sight from AIDS. Brad Melamed's drawings were selected from his recent series, "Character Analysis," in which he uses a typewriter to explore elements of language, nature, pleasure, anxiety, sex, love, and energy. Stefanie Nagorka uses materials such as beeswax, paper, graphite, and detritus to explore natural processes, such as stasis, flux, order, and chaos.
There was a symposium on Wednesday, January 30, at 6 pm, during which the artists in the exhibition discussed their work and answered questions from the audience.
