Selections Summer 2000

Selections Summer 2000 featured work by Nina Lola Bachhuber, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Amy Cutler, Georganne Deen, Margaret Evangeline, and Edward Pien. The Selections exhibition series, while typically non-thematic, provided the artists with an opportunity to present a significant body of work, and demonstrated the diversity of content, materials, and formal concerns found in contemporary drawing.

Nina Lola Bachhuber created drawings with watercolor, stitching, and graphite that evoked the power of the fragment. Berlinde de Bruyckere's watercolors were renderings of female figures covered with layers of blankets, as if to block out communication. Amy Cutler made precise drawings in gouache of people, animals, and objects, creating resonant dreams and stories in the midst of a white background. Georganne Deen painstakingly constructed computer-generated drawings, produced with nearly obsolete computer equipment. Margaret Evangeline's installation, which consisted of sheets of paper layered onto a large table, evoked the body by absence. Edward Pien showcased For All the Tears in China, 1999, an elliptical construction which the viewer could look into through cutouts.

Selections Summer 2000 was one in a continuing series of exhibitions that brought the work of emerging artists from across the nation and abroad to public attention. All of the featured artists had participated in The Drawing Center's Viewing Program, a service which offered emerging artists an opportunity to present drawing to the curatorial staff for professional feedback and to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition.

The Drawing Center published Drawing Papers 9 and 10, a new series of publications devoted to drawing, to accompany both of the exhibitions. Drawing Papers 10 included brief texts and an illustration of one work by each of the artists in Selections Summer 2000.

Selections Summer 2000 was held at 35 Wooster Street and ran consecutively with Mark Manders, Room with Several Night Drawings and One Reduced Night Scene, which was held at the Drawing Room on 40 Wooster Street.
