Selections Spring 1993
February 27 – March 27, 1993
Selections Spring 1993 featured work by eight artists, including Drew Beattie & Daniel Davidson, Joseph Cavallaro, Roland Flexner, Jim Hodges, Siobhan Liddell, Georgia Marsh, and Karen Yasinsky. The Selections exhibition series, while typically non-thematic, provided the artists with an opportunity to present a significant body of work, and demonstrated the diversity of content, materials, and formal concerns found in contemporary drawing.
Drew Beattie and Daniel Davidson premiered a selection of There's Summer and Fall Between Now and Then, a series of one hundred drawings based on different strategies of collaboration. Joseph Cavallaro's work features stylized self-portraits, oddly malleable cartoon-like faces, and highly finished portraits, all of which offer different perspectives on the elusive nature of identity. Karen Yasinsky draws portraits which appear as comic renditions of traditional portraiture, but simultaneously grapple with issues surrounding the representation of women. Roland Flexner's monotone drawings are highly personal reflections on the daily difficulties of the human condition. The notebook drawings of Siobhan Liddell are diaristic in nature, and when seen in succession, they present a highly personal account of daily experiences of time and place. Jim Hodges creates multi-layered drawings of flowers on ephemeral materials such as paper napkins and vellum. Georgia Marsh's work, graphic charcoal drawings of treetops, displays a partial, momentary view.
Selections Spring 1993 was one in a continuing series of exhibitions that brought the work of emerging artists from across the nation and abroad to public attention. All of the featured artists had participated in The Drawing Center's Viewing Program, a service which offered emerging artists an opportunity to present drawing to the curatorial staff for professional feedback and to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition.
Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
