Selections Fall 2001: 12 Views
September 9 – October 11, 2001
Selections Fall 2001: 12 Views reflected a range of approaches, issues, and materials, with each artist contributing to a broader definition of drawing today. The Selections exhibition series, while typically non-thematic, provided the artists with an opportunity to present a significant body of work, and demonstrated the diversity of content, materials, and formal concerns found in contemporary drawing.
Victoria Haven's tape works, existing on the border between sculpture and installation, hovered on the wall, loosely attached with pins. Jorge Macchi used newspaper cuttings to achieve works that were both political and poetic. Stephen Metts' drawing series, Data and Distribution, diagrammed the phenomenon of globalism. Jenny Perlin's animated film presented a series of fragments: hand-drawn receipts, self-help mottos, and drawings of banal objects, evoking a deadpan satire of consumer culture. Claudia Schmacke produced a new installation of transparent hoses through which water and air bubbles circulated in rhythmic pulses, giving shape to a hypnotic display of movement within containment. Marcelo Solá emphasized the poetic in his drawings using text, devices of revelation and concealment, and the contrast of white-and-black surfaces. Barthélémy Toguo created the mixed media series Das Bett (The Bed), a drawing series that depicted common objects, where dreamlike associations brought out both the seductions and threats of things normally overlooked.
Selections Fall 2001: 12 Views was one in a continuing series of exhibitions that brought the work of emerging artists from across the nation and abroad to public attention. All of the featured artists had participated in The Drawing Center's Viewing Program, a service which offered emerging artists an opportunity to present drawing to the curatorial staff for professional feedback and to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition.
Accompanying the Selections Fall 2001: 12 Views exhibition was an edition of the Drawing Papers, number 22 in a series of publications devoted to drawing, which included brief texts and an illustration of work by each of the artists.
Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
