Selections 49
February 2 – March 14, 1990
Selections 49 featured artists from the USSR, Yugoslavia, Canada, California, and New York. The Selections exhibition series, while typically non-thematic, provided the artists with an opportunity to present a significant body of work, and demonstrated the diversity of content, materials, and formal concerns found in contemporary drawing. Selections 49 explored installation pieces and found objects, to drawings with surfaces altered by rocket engines.
Selections 49 was one in a continuing series of exhibitions that brought the work of emerging artists from across the nation and abroad to public attention. All of the featured artists had participated in The Drawing Center's Viewing Program, a service which offered emerging artists an opportunity to present drawing to the curatorial staff for professional feedback and to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition. Selections 49 provided an important forum for examining the wide spectrum of issues found in contemporary drawing, with the artists further discussing their work at an informal symposium.
An informal symposium was held on Wednesday, February 14 at 7:00 pm. All of the artists in the exhibition discussed their work and answered questions from the audience.
Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
