Selections 47
November 2 – December 9, 1989
Selections 47 featured the works of talented artists discovered through The Drawing Center's unique Viewing Program. The artists in the exhibition were: John Allen, Janine Antoni, Robert C. Baker, Isabel De Obaldia, Gudrun Mertes Frady, Bernhard Garbert, Greg Hilton, Arlan Huang, Ezra Kohn, Stuart Lachs, Christopher Lesnewski, Roderic Matthews, Mary Murphy, John Sapp, and Corinne Segal.
The exhibition brought together fifteen artists from Germany, the Bahamas, Panama, Canada and the United States who had been selected from 600 artists seen in the past six months. Their work reflected the great diversity found in contemporary drawing, ranging from formal explorations to political narratives. Included were two artists responding to present-day crises—Isabel De Obaldia, whose drawings were satirical cartoons inspired by horrors witnessed in Panama, and John Sapp, whose monumental charcoal drawings were a moving commentary on the AIDS epidemic.
An informal symposium was held on Wednesday, November 29 at 7:00 pm. All of the artists in the exhibition discussed their work and answered questions from the audience.
Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
