Selections 37
February 26 – March 21, 1987
Selections 37 featured works on paper by eight emerging artists. Included were: Andrius Balukas, Suzanne Bocanegra, Jan Cunningham, Carter Hodgkin, Hideki Matsumoto, Susan Moore, Ed Robbins, and Sara B. Waterbury. All of the artists had been chosen through The Drawing Center's Viewing Program.
The juxtaposition of diverse imagery featured prominently in the work of a number of artists in the exhibition. Hideki Matsumoto utilized the symbols of modern technology and the monuments of ancient civilizations in his hand-colored xerography. The multiple paneled drawings of Carter Hodgkin combined patterns, maps and symbolic images drawn from non-Western, pre-industrial cultures with computer generated images. Andrius Balukas explored the various languages of art, including the traditions of 19th-century landscape painting and abstract geometry, placing these in new, non-associative contexts.
The monumental figures in Susan Moore's oil pastels from the Mannequin series presented looming presences that were unsettlingly vague and ambiguous. Ed Robbins' vibrantly-colored acrylics were filled with the quality of Caribbean light and pastel colors of local architecture. The rich texture of Sara B. Waterbury's black-and-white abstractions was created by a combination of acrylic paint, marble dust, plaster and ink. Jan Cunningham's monochromatic drawings used the circle and ellipse to focus on the relationship between two and three dimensions. Old books on farming provided a starting point for Suzanne Bocanegra's small paper and mixed media relief sculpture, which often incorporated pages of these books as well as commonplace things at hand, such as twigs, wax and string.
All of the artists in Selections 37 participated in a symposium on Wednesday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. The artists discussed their work and answered questions from the audience.
Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
