Selections 32
January 8 – February 15, 1986
Selections 32, a group exhibition of new work by eleven emerging artists, opened at The Drawing Center in 1986. The artists represented in the exhibition had been chosen through the Center's Viewing Program, which offered artists an opportunity to present their work to a member of the curatorial staff in a personal interview or to drop off work for consideration on Open Portfolio Day. All of the artists shown in The Drawing Center's Selections exhibitions had participated in these programs.
Included in Selections 32 were: Ron Anteroinen, Susan Barnes, Mark Barry, Barbara Buckman, Don Fearey, Angela Gentilcore, Vanessa Jackson, Rusty Kane, Lam, Yau Ming, Garry Nichols, and Janet Snell. Landscape appeared as a dominant concern in the work of many artists in Selections 32, ranging from Susan Barnes' abstractions of vast lateral landscapes in motion to Don Fearey's tiny diaristic pen and ink sketches illuminating emotional and psychological states of mind. Garry Nichols described his charcoal Headhunter series as landscapes of collected objects, while Angela Gentilcore juxtaposed natural elements with abstract forms derived from scientific study.
Lam, Yau Ming moved beyond calligraphic gesture to a landscape that was at once naturalistic and abstract. The interpersonal dynamics of city street scenes provided subject matter for much of Mark Barry's work, while Ron Anteroinen was fascinated by the uglier side of urban life. A Goyaesque nightmare world was explored by Janet Snell, and Rusty Kane also found inspiration in the work of Goya, for his series The Importance of 'Perros' (Dogs) in Spanish Painting. Barbara Buckman utilized printed matter from instruction manuals, weather charts, contour maps and other technical material for her playful collages. Vanessa Jackson pursued perfection of form and symmetry in her colorful abstractions.
All of the artists included in Selections 32 participated in a symposium at The Drawing Center on Wednesday, February 5, at 7:00 p.m. The artists discussed their work and answered questions from the audience.
Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
