Selections 25

February 29 – March 24, 1984

Ten emerging artists were featured in the Selections 25 exhibition at The Drawing Center, which opened in 1984. All of the artists had been selected through the Artists' Viewing Program at the Center. Pieces presented in the exhibition varied in media, but all fulfilled The Drawing Center's definition of drawing — that is, any unique work on paper.

Steven Layton Buckley's works overlaid figurative imagery on abstract expressionist surfaces, often including references to architectural forms. Randall Dahlgren limited his palette to black, white, and primary colors. The surfaces of his minimal geometric drawings were highly refined, and the works themselves alluded to the imagery of flags and signals. Ceilings, odd corners, and offbeat views of interiors formed the subject matter for Timothy Daly's charcoal drawings.

Wayne Enstice's Funny Paper series was a group of drawings done on newspaper. Fragments of images in bright colors appeared in isolated areas on the paper's surface. Walter Gurbo's paintings were limited in palette to warm white and black. The works were inspired by old Bible illustrations and the artist's impressions of the seascape near his home.

Michael Morris, a sculptor, created drawings which often contained images of serpents, and served as source material for future pieces. Jill Moser's works were made on mylar ripped from a roll. She used graphite on this surface to create an ambiguous surface which wavered between illusionistic and flat space. Paul Smith's drawings were experiments in perspective which strove for a sense of realism that was experiential rather than photographic. A large drawing by Levent Tuncer presented a compilation of crowd scenes, and was made up of nine panels rendered in different degrees of realism. William Wilkins worked with a variety of symbols which included letters from alphabets and deliberately obscured images of figures.

All of the artists in Selections 25 participated in a symposium at The Drawing Center on Wednesday evening, March 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
