Róza El-Hassan: Drawings

June 6 – July 26, 2003

For her first exhibition in the United States, Hungarian artist Róza El-Hassan (born 1966) created new work directly on the walls of the Drawing Room to make a drawing consisting of a delicate lattice of pencil lines encompassing the gallery. The graphite traces emerged from the wall in discrete masses of wire, as transformations from an ephemeral state into a solid one. The wire extensions underscored El-Hassan's interest in maintaining fluidity between media and space. The wall drawing also incorporated several works on paper from a recent series entitled R. thinking/dreaming about overpopulation.
