Previously Unseen

January 1 – March 31, 1979

Previously Unseen, an exhibition of works by 11 artists who had not yet exhibited their work in New York City, was on view at The Drawing Center in 1979. The exhibition, which centered on the way these young artists used recognizable objects, images, and spaces in their work, was the latest in a series selected through The Drawing Center's Artists' Viewing Program. This program enabled the staff of the Center to view the work of over 2000 artists since its inception. The artists featured in the current exhibition were Andrew Glass, Anne Heimann, Jak Katalan, Karen Loftus, Lauriston Marshall, Mary Jane Mazuchowski, Grover Mouton, Graham Nickson, Lance Rutledge, Lydia Viscardi, and Alan Young.

The diversity of styles and media in Previously Unseen included Grover Mouton's architectural drawings of the plans for environmental sound and structure art works, eleven-foot long charcoal figure drawings by Graham Nickson, Anne Heimann's highly detailed, colored-pencil drawings of pebbles, and Jak Katalan's geometric wall-hung sculptures of colored paper. Andrew Glass created collaged constructions using reproductions of famous works of art. Alan Young's brightly colored watercolors contained representations of sailboats, blimps, and typewriters, and Karen Loftus altered and retouched contemporary pop imagery in her unique watercolored prints. Mary Jane Mazuchowski portrayed masked dogs and gloves in her pastel and crayon drawings, and the dreamlike figures in Lydia Viscardi's drawings were shown stringing lights on Christmas trees and lying in barren spaces. Lance Rutledge depicted recognizable spaces and corners constructed of areas of abstract patterning and coloring, and Lauriston Marshall's drawings were diagrammatic representations of houses and other types of buildings in black on white with bars of various bright colors.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a symposium with the 11 artists was held on Wednesday, July 11 at 8:00 p.m.

Curated through The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program.
