New Drawing in America: 5th Anniversary Show
January 13 – May 1, 1982
New Drawing in America was a two-part exhibition which celebrated the fifth anniversary of The Drawing Center, and presented new work by 174 artists who had participated in group exhibitions at The Drawing Center since its opening in 1977. In conjunction with New Drawing in America, the fifth anniversary celebration of The Drawing Center, three participating artists presented an evening of performance works on Wednesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. The artists, Kirsten Hawthorne, Tony Mascatello and Paul Zelevansky, were all included in New Drawing in America.
Kirsten Hawthorne presented a work entitled Nightlife Art Sports Music, first performed in December of 1980, and incorporating a work on paper entitled Lauve Store. Nightlife Art Sports Music featured a toy piano and telephone, dialect monologue, iridescent cellophane, a flashlight and space gun.
Roamin' Candle was presented by Tony Mascatello, a painter who had been making humorous performances in New York since 1975. In addition to his own pieces, he had performed with Mabou Mines and Robert Wilson. Roamin' Candle attacked the twin demons of fatigue and despair with a lance of ridicule. The single character, an artist, got his day under way despite a series of pathetic setbacks.
Paul Zelevansky's work Anthony and the Ascetics at the Crossroad described the attempted escape of Anthony (played by Paul Zelevansky) from the weight of his past. Anthony formed a rock band, the Ascetics, to carry him into the future. Past concerns were played out through various parables, sermons, demonstrations and tableaux, while the present was formed by the singing of Anthony and the Ascetics. Terry Stoller played the Ascetics and various characters from the past. Besides The Drawing Center, the Ascetics had performed at book gatherings, the Franklin Furnace, and other alternative spaces.
