Curated by Susette Min, this exhibition was Los Angeles-based artist Margaret Honda's (born 1961) first New York City solo museum exhibition. It focused on a series of site-specific drawings that connect the natural sciences and the visual arts to the workings of memory and loss.
A box of family photographs, a printed diagram of a lung, and a tattered bit of tailor's carbon paper all served as Honda's source material. Having tinkered with and transformed these seemingly ordinary objects, Honda created abstractions that reincarnate the lost objects into other forms. Her methodology and artistic practice is a hybrid of scientific experimentation of Étienne-Jules Marey and D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson and aesthetic invention that explores the physical and psychical processes of transformation. The different components that made up Transfer Pictures were regenerated to become possible antidotes to loss and, in the words of the artist, "new versions of the originals."
Margaret Honda: Transfer Pictures was made possible, in part, with the support of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
