The Drawing Center's Drawing Out program provided neighboring public schools with a museum visit and in-school art-making sessions with teaching artists, culminating in Drawing Out, an exhibition of student artwork. The 3rd grade class from P.S. 42 Benjamin Altman School explored connections between The Drawing Center's exhibition, Richard Tuttle: It's a Room for 3 People, and its Social Studies curriculum on the Pueblo, Seminole, Ojibwa, and Iroquois tribes. The students worked in groups, each creating a pattern inspired by a Richard Tuttle wall drawing and Native American textile, jewelry, and housing designs. Each group completed its project by creating a large patchwork drawing from the repeated pattern.
Students from the 10th grade English class of a City-As-School high school created a project linking The Drawing Center's exhibition, 3 x Abstraction: New Methods of Drawing by Hilma af Klint, Emma Kunz, and Agnes Martin, with the students' writing curriculum on personal and societal freedoms. Using collage, calligraphic ink, slide painting, and scratching techniques, the students created a slide show that combined their drawings and personal writings.
The project by the 2nd grade class of P.S. 130M also incorporated 3 x Abstraction, but with the study of geometry and New York architecture. Utilizing graph paper in the manner of Emma Kunz, four student groups designed abstract futuristic cityscapes and then turned them into three-dimensional sculptures.
The 10th grade English class of Soho Communications Art Academy was inspired by The Drawing Center's publications, especially Drawing Papers 49: Richard Tuttle: Manifesto, and interwove student poetry and drawings to explore topics such as racism and urban life.
