Known for his diverse artistic practice, American artist Sterling Ruby works in sculpture, video, photography, drawing, collage and installation to address notions of violence, repression and social control. Accompanying the exhibition Sterling Ruby: CHRON, this publication features a selection of works spanning from 2003 to 2008, including new large-scale works conceived for the Drawing Room. The publication foregrounds the role of drawing as medium, gesture and act in Ruby’s multivalent body of work. An essay by Erik Frydenborg leads us through Ruby’s recurring visceral, cryptic and architectonic motifs, ranging from “Supermax” prisons to biomorphic forms.
