Elizabeth Peyton, "Nico + Flowers (Nico Muhly)"

The Drawing Center is pleased to present Nico + Flowers (Nico Muhly), a new limited edition print by renowned artist Elizabeth Peyton. Co-published with Specific Object, Peyton's linocut was created at the legendary Two Palms Press in SoHo and depicts Nico Muhly, an American composer who sat for Peyton this spring, at the start of the global pandemic. Printed in rich purple ink, the bust-length portrait is a quintessential example of Peyton’s deft draftsmanship and admiring eye.

Elizabeth Peyton (b. 1965), is one of the most important artists to have emerged from New York over the past two decades. Beginning her career in the mid 1990s with small portraits of various historical figures and artists she admired, Peyton developed an immediately recognizable signature style. Prolific as a painter, she has become known as a master printmaker, adept at a host of techniques including monotypes, etchings, linocuts, and woodcuts, for which she is particularly admired.

Peyton has exhibited all over the world, and her work has been the subject of career retrospectives at the New Museum in New York (2008; traveled to the Walker Art Center), the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, (2009),the National Portrait Gallery, London (2019-2020), and UCCA, Beijing (2020). Her work is in the collection of almost every major museum in the U.S. and Europe, including The Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art.

Specific Object is a bookstore, gallery, and think-tank dedicated to art after 1958—with an emphasis on Pop, Fluxus, Minimal, and Conceptual art. Founded by art historian, curator, writer, and art dealer, David Platzker, Specific Object explores what informed these movements from the 1960s and 1970s and how the work of successive generations of artists follows formally and intellectually from these precursors.

The Drawing Center's limited editions are generously donated by artists and provide critical support for all that the organization does—from groundbreaking exhibitions and publications, to education and community initiatives.
